The city got importance in the 16th century under the rule of Shivappa Nayaka from Kaladi Dynasty. Historic and Cultural Centre located in the heart of the city, on the banks of river Tunga. Built by Keladi ruler, Shivappa Nayaka in the16th century, it is entirely built of rosewood. Archaeology department of Karnataka maintains this Museum which has collections of stone carvings and antiques of the Keladi period.

A monumental 107-ft-tall flagpole with the national flag of 20-ft-long and 30-ft-wide is unfurled on it. Installed to promote patriotism and also an attraction for visitors to the park.
