Onake Abbi Falls often referred as the Cheerapunji of South India, is in Someshwara reserved forest inside the majestic Agumbe region of Western Ghats. The Western Ghats receives incessant rain from July to November.
"Onake" in the Kannada language means a pounding stick which is used to pound grains in villages.
One has to trek for 5 km from Agumbe to reach this spot. Beautiful views of the valleys, ever Green Rain-Forests of Agumbe can be seen. The trail through jungle highly leech infested leads to the bottom of Onake Abbi falls completely downhill and Its natural pool. It would take you at least one and a half hours to get there.
Vehicles can’t be driven beyond a certain point, hence trekking is mandatory. On the way, trekkers can notice an overwhelming variety of medicinal plants that grow here. The trail that leads you to the magnificent sight of Onake Abbi Falls, water falling from 400 meters height.
Trekkers are advised to trek in a group and to take a local guide.Total trekking distance of 4 kilometres Agumbe main road and 1 kilometre from Agumbe bus stand to Onake Abbi trek trail. Trekkers can also avoid town by the following trail from Agumbe Check Post.
Skilled trekkers can hike top of the falls from where can view south Canara, as far as 100 kilometres till Mangalore depending on how clear the day is.
Falls is created by a stream of water populated during monsoon and not by any river, hence no rush of water.
This place is home to a variety of reptiles, amphibians and birds. Sambhar, mouse deer, civet cat and leopard are sighted at times.
Onake Abbi falls is fed by many jungle seasonal streams and not by any river, hence it runs rather dry in summer. Monsoon till January would be the best time to see Onake Abbi.

There are no direct trains to Agumbe, however, the nearest train railway stations are Udupi Railway Station, located 55 km away and second nearest station is Shivamogga / Shimoga Railway Station is 90 km. One can get private taxi or buses from both the Railway stations.
