Kuppalli ಕುಪ್ಪಳ್ಳಿ


A small village in Thirthahalli taluk of Shivamogga ( Shimoga ) district in Karnataka. It is popular as it is the birthplace and childhood home of the eminent Kannada playwright and poet Kuvempu.

Kavimane means House of the poet in Kannada. Nestled in the midst of green forests of Malnad, the house is a prominent view. This three-storedtiled house has been renovated and converted into a museum. House also referred as 'Thotti Mane', (house with central square area open to sky resembling a pond (Thotti in Kannada) and surrounded by a high courtyard.

A small hill in Kuppali near Kavimane. Rock monument made of megalithic rocks dedicated to Kuvempu. Rocks resemble the Stonehenge in England. A monument, where Kuvempu was laid to rest after his death and a memorial has been constructed here. Kuvempu used to discuss about literature and other topics with litterateur friends on a small rock near this place. The scenery around this place is breathtaking. 



ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕವಿ, ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ, ವಿಶ್ವಮಾನವರೆಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತರಾದ ಕುವೆಂಪು ಅವರ ಕವಿಹೃದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಚೇತನವಿತ್ತ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟಹಳ್ಳಿ. ಅದರ ಸನಿಹದ ಒಂದು ಎತ್ತರವಾದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಕವಿಶೈಲ ನೋಡಬೇಕಾದ ಸ್ಥಳ. ಕುವೆಂಪು ಅವರು ಆಡಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಭವ್ಯ ಮನೆ. ನೋಡಲು ಲಭ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಈ ಮನೆಯು ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರ ನೆನಪನ್ನು ಮರುಕಳಿಸಲು ಅವರ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ ವಸ್ತು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾಲಯವನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿಶೈಲವಿದ್ದು ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪೂರ್ತಿ ನೀಡಿದ ತಾಣ ಎಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದರೂ ಸಾಲು ಸಾಲು ಗಿರಿಪಂಕ್ತಿ. ಈ ತಾಣದ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಆಸ್ವಾದಿಸಿದ ಕುವೆಂಪು, ಬಿ.ಎಂ.ಶ್ರೀ. ಮುಂತಾದ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಹೆಸರಾಂತ ಕವಿಗಳು ಕುಳಿತ ಜಾಗ ಇದಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರ ಸಮಾಧಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಂಪಿ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. 


Kuvempu (ಕುವೆಂಪು) pen name is the short form of “Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa”.

In Kavimane, one can see various articles. Prominent among them is the mantapa within which Kuvempu's marriage was solemnized. Heritage wooden furniture’s and utensils like Tottilu (cradle), Kadigolu (utensil used for churning curd into buttermilk) and many are preserved here.


Photographs taken of Kuvempu's childhood and important events in his lifetime are displayed here.

Various awards and citations conferred to Kuvempu like Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Karnataka Ratna awards are displaced.


Visitor can also see collection of books written by Kuvempu, like Sri Ramayana Darshanam, written in his own handwriting. Doctorate certificates honored by various universities to Kuvempu, articles used by Kuvempu during his lifetime (like his pen, umbrella, walking stick, umbrella etc) and Lagnapatrike (wedding invitation card) can also be seen here.


Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Pratishtana (Trust) facilitates visitors to shop books authored by Kuvempu and cassettes and CDs based on his work.

Kuppalli can be visited throughtout the year. Sept to Feb will be ideal to visit places around.


How to Reach

Kuppali is 18 km from Thirthahalli (taluk headquarters) and 80 km from Shivamogga ( Shimoga ) (district headquarters) on National Highway NH-13 (Shimoga - Thirthahalli road).

The nearest railway station is in Shivamogga (Shimoga). Many trains run from Bangalore and Mysore to Shivamogga (Shimoga).

ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಕೇಂದ್ರದಿಂದ ೩೪೯ ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ತೀರ್ಥಹಳ್ಳಿಯಿಂದ ಕೊಪ್ಪಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.
