About Chandragutti

Chandragutti, (Chandraguptapura of ancient times) was a stronghold of the Kadambas Kings of Banavasi (third-sixth centuries A.D.), In an inscription (lithic record) dated A.D. 1396 of the reign of Vijayanagara king Harihara II (A.D. 1377-1404), Bachanna, a local chieftain claims to have ruled over Chandragutti later the area was under the Keladl Nayakas. The place was attacked by the Palegar of Bilgi in the time of Haidar Ali.

ಚಂದ್ರಗುತ್ತಿ (ಪ್ರಾಚೀನಕಾಲದ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತಪುರ) ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ.೩ ರಿಂದ ೬ ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದವರೆಗೆ ಬನವಾಸಿ ಕದಂಬರ ಕಾಲದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಪಟ್ಟಣವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ವಿಜಯನಗರ ರಾಜ ವೀರ ಹರಿಹರನ (೧೩೭೭-೧೪೦೪) ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಚಣ್ಣ ಎಂಬ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ನಾಯಕ ಚಂದ್ರಗುತ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಅಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದಾಗಿ ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. ೧೩೯೬ ರ ಒಂದು ಶಾಸನದಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನಂತರ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಕೆಳದಿನಾಯಕರ ಅಳ್ವಿಕೆಗೆ ಒಳಪಟ್ಟಿತು.

Interesting Facts about Chandragutti

Chandragutti is an iconic place and historically significant place, chandragutti was under control of Kadambas, vijaynagars and later under Keladi Nayakas. It was formely well-fortifiled.


In the old days, it was called Chandraguptapura, Chandraguttipura, Chandraguttipeta and Guttidurga. According to a legend, the place had the hermitage old sage Jamadagni.

Granite stone (locally called Chandragutti Kallu) is found in abundance here.

The fort has natural lake and view point tip near to western part of the fort.


A village is situated at the base of the hill of the same name and is surrounded by thick forest area. The summit is 848 meters high above the sea level.

Renukadevi Temple - Chandragutti

The Renukadevi temple situated on the summit of an elevated spot and is a large natural cave approached by a flight of steps enshrining a small masked Sivalinga (about 15-24 centimeters high, which is covered with a metal face). The place has been associated with saint Jamadagni and his wife Renuka (locally called Chandragutyamma). The colossal hip like boulders in the cave are identified as Renuka in hiding when Parashurama pursued her. The outer facade of the cave forms the vestibule, which is in the chalukyan style. A pillared hall was added the during Viiayanagara period. Almost at the foot of the Renukamba temple facing west is a temple of Bhairava.

ರೇಣುಕಾದೇವಿ ದೇವಾಲಯ

ಕಿರಿದಾದ ಗುಡ್ಡದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾಗಿರುವ ರೇಣುಕಾಂಬಾ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಒಂದು ವಿಶಾಲವಾದ ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕ ಗುಹೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು ಅದರ ಸನಿಹದತನಕ ಪಾವಟಿಕೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಒಳಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವಿದ್ದು ದೊಡ್ದ ಪೃಷ್ಠಕಾರದ ಎರಡು ಬಂಡೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಶುರಾಮನಿಂದ ಹೆದರಿ ಈ ಗುಹೆಯನ್ನು ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸಿದ ರೇಣುಕಯೆಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಋಷಿ ಜಮದಗ್ನಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಆತನ ಸತಿ ರೇಣುಕಯದೆಂದು ಪ್ರತೀತಿಯಿದೆ. ಗುಹೆಯ ಮುಂಭಾಗವು ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಅಂತರಾಳವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು ಅದಕ್ಕು ಮುಂದೆ ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಕಾಲದ ಸಭಾಮಂಟಪವನ್ನು ಆಳವಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಗುಡ್ಡದ ತಪ್ಪಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಭಿಮುಖವಾಗಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಭೈರವನ ಗುಡಿಯಿದೆ
